At Southern Blue, we proudly manufacture AdBlue® at our purpose-built facility in Pakenham, Victoria. From the arrival of raw materials through to manufacturing, testing, storage and delivery, every stage is carefully controlled to protect the quality and consistency of the finished product.

What is AdBlue® made from?

AdBlue® is a precisely manufactured solution containing:

• 32.5% high-purity automotive-grade urea
• 67.5% deionised water

The concentration must remain within strict specifications. Using unsuitable raw materials, ordinary tap water or incorrect mixing ratios can contaminate the product and potentially affect a vehicle’s Selective Catalytic Reduction system.

Step 1: Selecting high-quality raw materials

Quality begins before manufacturing starts.

The urea and deionised water used to manufacture AdBlue® must meet strict purity requirements. Contaminants such as minerals, metals, oils, dust and other chemicals can affect product quality, which is why raw materials must be carefully selected, handled and stored.

At Southern Blue, our manufacturing process is designed to maintain quality from the moment raw materials arrive at our facility.

Step 2: Controlled manufacturing

The ingredients are combined using controlled manufacturing processes to achieve the correct 32.5% urea concentration.

Equipment used for AdBlue® production must also be suitable for the product. AdBlue® can become contaminated through contact with incompatible materials or equipment previously used for other fluids.

Our Pakenham facility has been purpose-built to support consistent manufacturing while protecting the product throughout production.

Step 3: Quality control and traceability

Every manufactured batch is recorded and traceable.

Batch traceability means the product can be tracked through manufacturing, testing, packaging and supply. This provides an important level of quality assurance for customers purchasing anything from bottled AdBlue® through to IBCs and bulk deliveries.

Step 4: Independent batch testing

Manufacturing is only one part of the process.

Every batch of Southern Blue AdBlue® is independently pharmaceutically tested to confirm that it meets the required ISO 22241 quality standards before being supplied to customers. Southern Blue also operates under a VDA licence, which supports the correct manufacture and use of the registered AdBlue® name.

Testing helps verify important characteristics including the correct urea concentration and the absence of harmful contamination.

Step 5: Correct storage and packaging

After testing, AdBlue® must continue to be protected from contamination.

Storage tanks, pumps, hoses, nozzles, containers and transport equipment must all be suitable for AdBlue®. This protects the product from dirt, fuel, oils, incompatible metals and other materials that could compromise quality.
