What is AdBlue®?
AdBlue® is one of the most important developments in modern diesel technology. While it is often mistaken for a fuel additive, AdBlue® is actually a high-purity diesel exhaust fluid that enables modern diesel engines to dramatically reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. What is AdBlue®?
AdBlue® is a high-purity diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) used in modern diesel vehicles fitted with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. Its purpose is to reduce harmful nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions produced during the diesel combustion process.
Despite its name, AdBlue® is not a fuel, and it is not added to your diesel tank. Instead, it is stored in a dedicated AdBlue® tank on the vehicle and automatically injected into the exhaust system when the engine is running.
Without a correctly functioning AdBlue® system, many modern diesel vehicles will not continue to meet the emissions standards they were designed and certified to achieve.
What is AdBlue® made from?
Certified AdBlue® is manufactured using only two carefully controlled ingredients:
- 32.5% high-purity automotive-grade urea
- 67.5% deionised water
The 32.5% concentration has been carefully selected through scientific research and is internationally standardised under ISO 22241. This exact ratio provides optimum performance within SCR systems while maintaining the freezing and operating characteristics required for modern diesel vehicles.
Although AdBlue® is called a "blue" fluid, it is actually clear and colourless, it can form into a 'crystal' looking substance when dry.
ISO 22241 is the international quality standard that governs the manufacture, storage, handling and transportation of AdBlue®. AdBlue® manufactured to this standard helps ensure consistent quality and reliable performance in modern SCR systems.

High-purity automotive-grade urea prills are one of the two ingredients used to manufacture certified AdBlue®.
Why does AdBlue® crystallise?
AdBlue® can form white looking crystals if small amounts are exposed to air or allowed to dry on vehicle filler necks, dispensing nozzles or other surfaces. This occurs because the water evaporates, leaving behind high-purity urea crystals.
In most cases, this is completely normal and does not indicate poor-quality AdBlue®.
To help prevent crystallisation:
- Keep AdBlue® containers and tanks tightly sealed when not in use.
- Wipe away spills promptly with clean water.
- Use clean dispensing equipment to avoid contamination.
- Store AdBlue® in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations and away from direct sunlight and excessive heat.
If crystals do form, they can usually be dissolved and cleaned away using clean water. Never use fuel, solvents or harsh chemicals to remove AdBlue® crystals.
Is AdBlue® a fuel?
No.
One of the most common misconceptions is that AdBlue® is a fuel additive. It is not.
AdBlue® never enters the engine or mixes with diesel fuel. Instead, it is injected into the exhaust system after combustion has taken place.
Its only purpose is to help reduce harmful emissions before they are released into the atmosphere.
Why is AdBlue® so important?
Modern diesel engines are designed to be powerful, fuel-efficient and durable. However, during the combustion process they naturally produce a range of exhaust gases, including nitrogen oxides (NOx).
Nitrogen oxides are formed when nitrogen and oxygen in the air react at the high temperatures inside a diesel engine.
Without emissions control systems, these gases are released into the atmosphere where they contribute to:
- Air pollution
- Smog formation
- Ground-level ozone
- Acid rain
- Reduced air quality
Long-term exposure to elevated NOx levels has also been linked to respiratory and environmental impacts, which is why governments around the world have introduced increasingly strict vehicle emissions standards.
AdBlue® isn't an optional extra
Many people think of AdBlue® as something manufacturers added to create another maintenance item.
In reality, AdBlue® is an essential component of the emissions system.
Without it, an SCR-equipped diesel vehicle cannot reduce nitrogen oxide emissions as designed.

If the tank becomes empty or the emissions system cannot function correctly, many vehicles will warn the driver and, depending on the manufacturer, may eventually prevent the engine from restarting once it has been switched off.
